Surat, Australia

One of the more rural, tiny settlements in Australia is Surat. It is a service town, situated on the banks of the Tiver Balonne. Located in the state of Queensland, it is a little more than 75km away from Roma, and 450km to the west of Brisbane. The area that is currently known as Surat was discovered in 1846 by Sir Thomas Mitchell, while he was on the fourth expedition, trying to find an overland route connecting Port Essington and Boree.

Surat, Australia

Sir Thomas Mitchell supposedly named the Balonne River out of a little misunderstanding. An Aborigine apparently misunderstood his question, and told him what the hatchet that he was holding was called Surat in their language, rather than the name of the river. The situation isnt very surprising, as many places in the continent-country seem to have been named in such a manner.

Though Surat is a small place, there are some good sites to see. First, theres the Shire Hall. It is probably the most interesting site in Surat. It is an unusual sight, no doubt. A large wooden structure located on the road connecting the little town to St George. It is sort of a clock tower, with the regular numerals on the clock face being replaced by the name Alex J Simpson.

Then theres the Memorial park. Its a great picnic spot for the inhabitants of the little settlement and the travellers. The Surat Oil Fields operated by Bridge Oil is located around 80km to the south of the settlement.

Surat was surveyed in1850, about 4 years after it was discovered, by James Burrowes. Apparently, Burrowes named the little place after his home town in India. He also named most of the streets in the town with the names of Family members, and no surprise, the main street is called Burrowes.
